Documenting a reproducible research protocol: the basics

AuraVia Research-team4 min leestijd

A protocol that works once is only useful if it can be repeated — by you, months later, or by someone else entirely. Reproducibility isn't just about the science; it's about whether the details were actually written down at the time, rather than reconstructed from memory afterwards.

What's worth logging at preparation time

The most common gap in a research log isn't the result — it's the preparation details that seemed too obvious to write down in the moment. Capturing them at the time, rather than after the fact, is what actually makes a protocol repeatable.

  • The batch or lot reference for every compound used, not just the product name.
  • The exact diluent, volume, and resulting concentration for any reconstitution.
  • Storage conditions and how long material sat at each stage before use.
  • The date of preparation, separate from the date of use if they differ.

Why batch references specifically matter here

A batch reference is what ties a specific unit back to its own Certificate of Analysis, as covered in our batch traceability article. Logging it against every result means a later question — 'was this the same purity as last time?' — has an actual answer rather than an assumption.

Keeping the record usable later

A log is only as useful as it is easy to search later. A simple, consistent structure — one entry per preparation, same fields every time — tends to hold up far better over months than free-form notes, even if it feels like unnecessary overhead in the moment.
